Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen

Posted by:

Often clients ask me if organic matters and if it really makes a difference for our health. Some studies show that organic foods contain higher levels of nutrients  and many think they taste better. Another reason that I choose organic for my family is to avoid ingesting the high levels of pesticides in conventionally farmed produce. They are toxic to us, cause many  health issues and are harmful to the environment as well. However, organic is definitely more expensive. Below is a list of produce categorized by the Environmental Working Group called The Dirty Dozen (the highest contaminated produce-buy these organic whenever you can) and the Clean 15 (the least contaminated produce). It is a good guide if you want to go organic but feel it is cost prohibitive.

Dirty Dozen (buy organic):
Apples
Strawberries
Grapes
Celery
Peaches
Spinach
Sweet bell and hot peppers
Nectarines
Cucumbers
Potatoes
Cherry tomatoes
Kale/Lettuce
Clean 15 (ok to buy conventional):
Onions
Sweet corn- however, this is genetically modified (GMO)  unless it’s organic
Pineapples
Avocado
Cabbage
Sweet peas
Asparagus
Mangoes
Eggplant
Kiwi
Cantaloupe (domestic)
Sweet potatoes
Grapefruit
Papayas
Mushrooms

The most important thing is to eat tons of produce, whether it is organic or not! It’s one of the best things you can do to have Vibrant Health!
