I was reading an article the other day and it dealt with the best daily practices for a long and healthy life. The following list contains foods, supplements and activities that I have read in various studies and publications again and again that everyone should do daily. Seven simple yet super actions that will make a huge difference in your life today and years from now.
- Take Turmeric
Turmeric contains the chemical curcumin. Curcumin and other chemicals in turmeric decrease inflammation. Research has also shown that turmeric can reduce high cholesterol (LDL and triglycerides), reduce pain from arthritis, is linked to improved brain function and should lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, among a list of other benefits.
Take 900mg of curcumin one or twice daily.
- Drink Green Tea
As with turmeric, green tea has a long list of positive benefits for your health. It may improve brain health, burn fat, lower risks of getting cancer and Alzheimer’s, and a reduced risk of stroke.
Drink 3 cups of brewed green tea a day before 5:00pm (so it won’t interfere with sleep).
Daily exercise has shown to improve your mood, helps control weight, lower your risk of chronic disease, improve digestion, boosts energy and improves sleep.
Exercise moderately 30 minutes 5-6 days a week.
- Supplement with Vitamin D
If you live above 40 degrees north latitude then you most likely do not get enough sun for your body to produce enough vitamin D, especially in the winter. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium, inhibits cancer growth, supports the immune system, regulates blood pressure and protects from chronic disease.
Supplement with 1000 – 2000 IU of vitamin D a day. Winter months in northern latitudes should take 5,000-6,000 IU daily.
People in cultures around the world have done in for centuries. Daily meditation has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve your immune system, improve concentration, alleviate symptoms of depression, decrease anxiety, increase brain activity, improve focus, help insomnia and help with pain management.
Meditate 20 minutes every day.
- Eat Vegetables and Fruits
Your mother was right, eat your vegetables (and fruits). They provide nutrients, fiber and taste to every meal. Eating vegetables and fruits helps with weight management, promotes regularity, improves mood, increases energy, reduces risks for chronic disease, boosts immune function, contains antioxidants, and prevents cancer.
Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits (both colors and types) for 8-12 cups every day.
- Increase Your Omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce triglycerides, reduce the chance of heart disease, reduce joint pain, alleviate depression, helps with ADHD and protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Take a supplement that provides 2 grams of Omega-3 daily in addition to eating a combination of oily fish and nuts 2-4 times a week.
Bonus: Eat (or use on your skin) Coconut Oil
Eating coconut oil is a proven Alzheimer’s Disease treatment, improves memory and brain function, clears up urinary tract infections, reduces inflammation, and is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. You can also use it on your skin for great results.
Use 2-3 tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil for cooking or in your smoothie every day.
Seven actions that will help you to live better today and every day for years to come. Do them every day (or at least most days).
